Ergonomic Considerations When Standing at Work
I have been selling office furniture for 40 years. Office ergonomics has changed dramatically over the years. Office Furniture Options talks to people every day about how to design or provide the ergonomically correct office.
I like how I work and do believe I am the perfect candidate or guinea pig for what we sell.
I am 50 years old. I have neck, upper and lower back discomfort. MRI’s have shown me why. I have mild carpal tunnel in my left wrist. I had my meniscus repaired in my right knee 7 years ago and that is flaring up. Two years ago I was having discomfort in both feet. I was told by my doctor I have planter fasciitis and now wear $300.00 orthotics. I also wear computer unfriendly bifocal glasses. Bifocals and computer screens do not play well together. Bifocals are not neck friendly.
So how should I work? I started to experiment with different ergonomic solutions. I love to stand but it now bothers my feet and I cannot sit for a prolonged period of time because of my back.
When I sit or stand it is hard to focus on my monitor. When I look though my bifocals my neck position is bad. However, I cannot see the screen well enough to not look through bifocals. My solution is to take off my glasses. I can see the screen but not the print next to me. So this is work in progress.
I use two screens. I use adjustable monitor arms so the screens are put to the optimal position. This greatly helps my neck and upper back. I make the adjustment when I stand and again when I sit. I sit or stand for about an hour.
When sitting I sit in a highly adjustable VION or CoolMesh chair. This allows my head, shoulders and hips to be properly stacked. Sitting takes the load off my feet and back.
I go from standing to sitting and sitting to standing with a height adjustable desk. My desk top is 36” x 72”. All of my print is right next to me and very easy to view.
I protect my feet with a very good, high quality anti-fatigue mat. Our mat is engineered with one goal in mind: to make the time you spend standing more comfortable and enjoyable.
So that is how I work. These are great solutions to ease the eye stain, neck pain, back pain, knee pain and foot pain. Why not ease the duress of the ergonomically incorrect work area? All facets make for the ergonomically safe and comfortable work environment.
